An abandoned Mall
Reimagined.
Originally Horton Plaza was designed by architect Jon Jerde, who made this outdoor recreation center a guinea pig for his experiential architecture aesthetic. From its bright colors, spatial rythmns and laberynth-like layout, Horton Plaza served as a great retail anchor for Downtown San Diego in the 80’s.
While great for the time, the mall slowly lost its appeal with retailers and shoppers leaving the site, making it an almost vacant space in need of restoration and life.
The new re-purposed design pays homage to it’s predecessor by keeping playful architectural elements while being practical and evolving with the times.
Campus at Horton will provide a diverse and dynamic mix of food, shopping, entertainment, health and wellness options, as well as unique cultural venues and programming. The campus will offer the city’s largest and most convenient on-site parking, covered spaces, and valet services for office and retail employees and guests.
The redevelopment of Campus at Horton will deliver all the benefits of a new modern building without the environmental impact and costs associated with ground-up construction. The development is pursuing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum green building certification
